Last night, July 6th, the City Council uninimously approved a trial and study of conversion to two-way traffic on 1st Street SW, slated to begin late this summer. Public Works is scheduling the change to begin approximately the end of August, giving time for construction to wrap up on 16th Avenue and 2nd Street Bridge areas. Currently, even more cut-through traffic has been added to the neighborhood due drivers detouring around these construction areas. Traffic-counts and results of the study will be more accurate once traffic has resumed to a normal pattern.
One City Council member, Bob Nowicki, commented on the two-way traffic trial proposal, stating that he was supportive of the change to two-way traffic in an effort to slow speeds in the area because parking would not be effected in any location on the street.
As parking is a concern in the area, the proposal for the one-year trial was simplified to separate the parking issue from the traffic issue in order to gain broader support for this first step in implementing traffic-calming in the Kutzky Park Neighborhood. The full proposal, now approved, can be read in the
Request for Council Action.
Results of the trial will be studied at the end of a one-year period. If traffic is slowed as predicted, a proposal will be brought before the neighborhood to implement the plan on the remaining one-way streets.
